5/21/2023 0 Comments Slade House by David Mitchell![]() ![]() Here, regular human beings can be born psychic and many different types of souls and soul-eaters exist. Slade House continues building on this mythology, deepening the complex rules of Mitchell's universe. Mitchell's The Bone Clocks, which was long-listed for the Man Booker Prize, is dark and fantasy-driven - set in a world where reincarnation is routine and evil beings consume others' souls to remain immortal. Adding to that original, Slade House is a single novel narrated from five different viewpoints. After writing a Twitter short story, "The Right Sort," in 280 tweets during the summer of 2014, the author realized that he had the beginnings of a book. If you've ever wondered what David Mitchell is all about but have never had time to read one of his hefty tomes, the slimmer Slade House delivers an intense yet fully authentic Mitchell experience. ![]() This ghost story, that David Mitchell started on Twitter, is his most accessible novel yet. ![]()

The result of Eimer's intrepid endeavours is a revelatory and moving book, enriched by vivid descriptive colour and an incredible cast of characters" - James Holland, The Times " has served up something refreshingly different: an old-fashioned travelogue, and an excellent one at that. It's a remarkable achievement because most are off limits to tourists and especially westerners. He proves to be an able guide, and A Savage Dreamland explores the beauty but also the troubling realities of Myanmar, offering a vivid portrait of a country struggling to overcome its past, "Eimer's journey takes him to all these trouble spots, including many not reported in the West. If Orwell could read A Savage Dreamland, he would be impressed by this choral-voiced account of a country where so many, for so long, have been silenced, Eimer paints a vivid picture of Myanmar today. book is a good primer on history, culture and modern-day politics, and on the power wielded by the Buddhist hierarchy. A well-written adventure in far-flung places that the world needs to know more about if it is to understand China., Explains wonderfully well why Burma today is both compelling and combustible. ![]() 5/21/2023 0 Comments The deficit myth![]() ![]() ![]() Should we worry about government overspending such as these recent, record deficits? Critics of government deficits say, “we are burdening our children and grandchildren” or “The piper is going to have to be paid.” By this “percent of GDP” metric, the US Federal deficit in the single month of June 2020, exceeded annual deficits in all but a few years, and even exceeded the deficit in some entire decades. Such statistics are best measured against the size of the economy. ![]() In June 2020, for example, the US government spent almost a trillion dollars more than it received. Consequently, governments have tended to spend too little causing unnecessary, missed opportunities to improve society. Before modern theory, economists evaluated government spending using old (incorrect) monetary theory. What is MMT? Professor Kelton introduces MMT by writing, “there are no constraints on the federal budget.” (p. This review summarizes the major tenets of MMT as articulated by Professor Kelton, places MMT into a broad bioeconomic framework, and then concludes with some statements of the possible validity of MMT. Pure Moon, I’m sorry to say, falls into that trap. If I have ever had a criticism of found family stories, it’s that unless they’re exceptionally written, you can all too easily end up with a tale that fails to develop any aspect of itself beyond the found family dynamic in a satisfying way. ![]() Share book reviews and ratings with Thomas, and even join a book club on Goodreads.įound family stories are all the rage these days in SFF, and Zen Cho, the acclaimed Malaysian author of Sorcerer to the Crown, has delivered her own in The Order of the Pure Moon Reflected in Water, a charming little adventure heavily influenced by Chinese wuxia fantasies. Part 2 begins with the quote, “ Mashed potatoes are to give everybody enough” and is comprised of Jackson’s recollections of being homeless (47). Crenshaw first came into Jackson’s life when his family was homeless, and Jackson has begun to notice familiar signs: piles of unpaid bills, arguments between his parents, and not enough food to eat. Jackson worries that he may be going crazy and that Crenshaw’s presence is a harbinger of trouble ahead. Her favorite is The House on East 88th Street, about a crocodile called Lyle who lives in a brownstone with a human family.įor Jackson, facts feel tangible and can be measured, while stories are lies, and he does not like being told lies. ![]() He hopes to be a scientist when he grows up and prefers facts over fancy, unlike his parents, who are musicians, and his sister, who loves stories. The sight troubles Jackson both because he has not seen Crenshaw since second grade and because he does not think of himself as “an imaginary friend kind of guy” (8). Jackson has just completed fourth grade when he sees Crenshaw surfing at the beach. It speaks to what Part 1 explores: the re-emergence of Crenshaw in Jackson’s life. ![]() The epigraph for Part 1 reads, “ A door is to open” (1, italics in original). Relevant quotes from Ruth Krauss’s A Hole is to Dig: A First Book of First Definitions, Jackson’s favorite childhood book, provide epigraphs for each part. ![]() 5/20/2023 0 Comments Panic oliver![]() ![]() Panic does not exist to challenge your mind it exists merely to occupy it. ![]() It’s the kind of show where Bonnie Bedelia is probably the most recognizable face, and that leaves one wondering how effective nepotism really is if this is the best that Ray Nicholson (son of Jack) can do (to his credit, Ray Nicholson - who plays a misunderstood bad-boy villain - is easily the most compelling character on the show).īesides, a more recognizable cast and higher production values might have created expectations that Panic wasn’t designed to fulfill, which might have done a disservice to a series that skates by on its high-concept premise, episode-ending cliffhangers, and an almost needless number of twists and turns. That’s not a reflection of how good Panic is, but it is a reflection of how addictively entertaining it is, even if it does toe the line between good-bad and bad-bad. ![]() I watched eight in one night, and then woke up and immediately watched the other two.
